Mark Lowry enjoys the variety of life as a percussionist. As an orchestral musician, he has over 25 years experience with the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Ballet, and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. He is also a founding member (and still timpanist) of the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, specializing in music of the Baroque and early Classical periods. In the theater, he has performed with the national touring companies of Wicked, The Producers, Little Shop of Horrors, Spamalot, A Chorus Line, Young Frankenstein, and several others. He has also performed numerous stage shows with show business legends such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennet, Marvin Hamlisch, Wynonna Judd, The Moody Blues, etc. As a teaching artist, his trio Tri-Percussion performs educational concerts throughout the Kansas City region and was awarded the 2009 Lighton Prize for Excellence as Teaching Artists. Mark is a native of St. Louis and holds the Master of Music degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Of course, newEar audiences know Mark best as the group’s percussionist. He is one of the founders of newEar ; in fact, the first organizational meeting for the fledgling group was held in his living room! Mark has always found challenges and freedom in contemporary music – challenges due to the difficulty and complexity of the demands, but freedom to shape the music without a long history of “classical interpretation” behind a given piece. newEar also gives him a chance often to dig into his sizeable collection of percussion instruments to find just the right sound for the music. He is pleased to have helped bring many seasons, with more to come, of world-class contemporary music to Kansas City audiences.
